Hello, having just watched the 41 gun salute in Green Park. I wondered what is the purpose or origin of the way the gunners hold both fists at chest height during the grill, particularly when moving around. I noticed this in Malta when the volunteers reenacted gun salutes in Barracca Gardens. Just curious.

When exactly were they doing this? IIRC its a place to put the hands while moving in double time – the norm on a gun position. If you look at videos of the Kings Troop you will see that they do this while engaged in the job of work of bringing the gun into action or mounting or dismounting.
